From the recording Anthology
This song would become one of the last songs recorded by Thin Ice prior to their break up. It was only performed a few times and was the only Thin Ice song with a lead vocal by bassist Collie Coburn who delivers it with style and intensity. The song, like some others before it, is another statement about the state of the band at a given point. By this time in our relatively short career the group was lacking direction and was not feeling that they were any further along on the road to success than they were a year earlier. In a metaphorical way, we were stating that we were wanting to "fly away" from the frustration we were feeling about our situation. In the end, the song was really about anyone who ever wanted to change their situation in the hopes of finding something better. I Wish That I Could Fly Away is notable for its powerful supporting riff, vocal harmonies, and climactic orchestral sounding horn parts. It would likely have become a popular addition to our performances had we been able to perform it more.
